Staff / Information
The Greater St. Louis County Fire Academy staff consists of:

    Dave Schmalzer, Chief Instructor
    Dave has been a part of the Fire Academy since 1978 and was around when the current
    building at 1266 Sutter Avenue opened in 1988.  Dave retired from the Ladue Fire
    Department as a Fire Captain in 2001 after 33 years of service.  He has an Associates
    Degree in Fire Science and holds certifications in State Firefighter I and II, Fire Service
    Instructor II, Fire Officer I and II, and is an adjunct instructor for the University of
    Missouri.  Dave currently serves as the Chief Instructor at the Greater St. Louis County
    Fire Academy.



    Betty Stoecklin, Administrative Assistant
    Betty has enjoyed working at the Fire Academy since 1993.








    Captain Tim Buehne, Comptroller and Deputy Chief Instructor
    Tim is a Captain for the Fenton F.P.D.  He started at the Fire Academy in February 1989.  
    Tim is the Comptroller for the Fire Academy and also serves as one of three Deputy Chief
    Instructors.






    Captain John Oddie, Deputy Chief Instructor
    John is a Captain for the St. Charles F.D. and has been with the Fire Academy since
    March 1985.  John is lead instructor for many of the recruit classes and serves as one of
    three Deputy Chief Instructors.






Captain Dean Everett, Deputy Chief Instructor
Dean is a Captain for the Frontenac F.D. and has instructed at the Fire Academy since February 1991.
Dean is also one of three Deputy Chief Instructors.  In addition, Dean serves as the Coordinator for the
GSLAFCA-Special Programs committee.  You're welcome to visit the

Our staff of lead and assistant instructors include line firefighters and fire officers at all levels in the fire service.
The Fire Academy also utilizes the services of civilian instructors to provide training in select skills areas.

                          If the Fire Academy must close or delay the start time, this
                          information can be found on KMOX 1120 (radio & web site); listed as
                          St. Louis County Fire Academy or on Channel 5 (KSDK) (television & web site);
                          listed as St. Louis Co. Fire Acad. Recruit Prog.

                          If we are listed on a SNOW SCHEDULE, the start time is 10:00 am.
